A Song A Day: Jan 24th – That Wonderful Monday Feeling

24 01 2011

That title is no typo. I really enjoy Mondays. For me, they represent the start of a new week, a new set of events to unfold. I’m feeling pretty good at the moment. It’s fast approaching one year now for me and my girlfriend, Chinese new year is just 13 days away (I’m celebrating it for the first time this year, I’m so excited to be visiting my nearest Chinatown for the parades) it’s almost Pub Quiz day also! On paper this looks like it could be a good week also.

Todays song comes from one of my favourite (if not absolute) bands of all-time. I first fell in love with this band back in year 6 at school when my teacher played Time from Dark Side Of The Moon. Since then I’ve loved and grown with their music. Pink Floyd have been the soundtrack to my life somewhat (especially the last few years) I absolutely adore their music. David Gilmour is a personal idol and I look up to him when it comes to my guitar playing.

The Pink Floyd song i’ve chosen is one of the latter-day floyd offerings, often said to be the worse of the bunch. That’s not true, the music is still fantastic. I chose the song paticulary for the upbeat, happy feeling which reflects my mood as I write this. This song always puts a smile on my face and makes me feel good. The video below is from the live concert film PULSE. This version is astounding and the lighting show to go with it is breath-taking. I hope you enjoy this song.

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction is holding me fast,
How can I escape this irresistible grasp?
Can’t keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted, just an earth-bound misfit, I
Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought, I thought of everything
No navigator to find my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension — that’s learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can’t keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night
There’s no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, a state of bliss
Can’t keep my mind from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit.

A light tickle yes- the year has gone very fast for us. In just over 1 and a half months, i’d of been going out with Milky for a year! I do think she might just be the one! Thankyou for your nice comments and wishes!

Aha, I don’t think I’ll be including any Pink Floyd during the year, I never really got that into them. However, you’ve reminded me of a Roger Waters tune that has a lot of memories… Watch this space! And you really cheered me up this morning. You’re the only person I’ve ever ‘met’ who likes Mondays. I guess you won’t be featuring the Boomtown Rats :0)

I’m a PF geek, I’m off to see Roger performing The Wall in the summer. Saved up for a ticket, should be worth it in triplicate. I actually really like the Boomtown Rats song you speak off, it always makes me think of Live Aid/8. Especially at Live 8 when he just stood there after the line ‘and the lesson today is how to die’ – a very powerful moment. Thanks for commenting!

It’s about 1 and a half months now until our 1 year anniversary. March 16th to be exact. I’m very fortunate, lucky and grateful to have met someone as all round awesome as Milky. I’m hoping to take some wonderful footage of the Chinese New Year celebrations, which I’ll no doubt put up here to augment the song of the day around that period. I’ve got a few ideas worked out for certain days in the future, one’s of significance shall we say?! Thanks for commenting!

Wow – love the lyrics to this song….I am not familiar with this Pink Floyd song. Thanks for sharing. Have a lovely Monday! Mine is just about done.

This song is from the 1987 A Momentary Lapse of Reason album. I was just amazed by this performance and everything in it. I’ve fortunate to have won a copy of Pulse signed by Pink Floyd from a radio compo during my college days. I treasure that DVD so much! Your monday is just about done? Wow, you must be several timezones east of me! – Thanks for commenting!

That was a great performance from Pink Floyd. My brother may be interested in the lighting. He’s a lighting director and works on award shows, corporate events and other entertainment events. When he was younger he toured with the bands.

Thanks for sharing Daniel. It was excellent!

I used to want to be a lighting guy, and did so much experience for it. I got into video production through that and then got heavily into the audio side of things, specialising in audio somewhat during my degree course. I’m trying to get an entry level media job, but that’s easier said then done. It’s quite the task haha – I’m very envious of your brother, that sounds like a fantastic job. Thanks for commenting!
