The 30 Day Song Challenge: 2/30 – ‘A song that makes you cry’

2 03 2011

Continuing the challenge, and rolling confidently into day 2…today’s guideline is ‘a song that makes you cry’

I have to admit, I don’t think I’ve ever listened to song which has physically moved me to tears, nor has any film that matter (partly because my mind will fluctuate between listening to the song, and listening to the music within (such as the chord progressions, melody lines, phrasing etc) However, I have come pretty close and that’s the song that I’m going to present for you today.

This song is a sombre piano led piece from an otherwise rockier outfit. This album was released whilst I was at school, and I remember that everybody in my year was talking about it and I think we all had a copy. I used to sit at the back of the class listening to music in secrecy if I could (I wasn’t the only one) I mainly listened to Mix CD’s that I’d made, but occasionally would bring in an album. This was one of the latter cases. I didn’t appreciate the song fully until after it came out and it was on said mix CD (I wanted a slower song to change things up a bit)

The lyrics and the way they are sung sound so heartfelt and honest it’s almost hard not to feel moved in someway. The simplistic backing to this track (piano and later on some violin parts) is part of the charm. You can imagine the singer sat down at a piano and she’s singing this song to herself, and she’s feeling every single word. The song sounds like a poem to someone no longer here. It could be a deceased love one, a friendship turned sour or a broken-up relationship. I feel as though this song is almost bittersweet in it’s lyrics. The chorus comes across that way to me, which is in contrast to the verses where there is more of a thinking about the bad times and feelings vibe. The song throughout though is very sad and has moved me close to tears on several occasions.

I am talking about My Immortal by Evanescence…

I’m so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
‘Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won’t leave me alone

These wounds won’t seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There’s just too much that time cannot erase

When you cried I’d wipe away all of your tears
When you’d scream I’d fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have
All of me

You used to captivate me
By your resonating life
Now I’m bound by the life you’ve left behind
Your face it haunts
My once pleasant dreams
Your voice it chased away
All the sanity in me

I’ve tried so hard to tell myself that you’re gone
But though you’re still with me
I’ve been alone all along

I can’t believe I forgot this so far when I was looking though my mp3s for good picks for this month. This is a real “stake through the heart” song for me. It closely describes a past relationship and its aftermath, but also helped me to get over it with the realisation that I’d also been alone for most of the time. It doesn’t make me cry any more though, so my search continues!

I think the phrase, stake through the heart is bang on the money here. It makes me think of past friendships, and how they’ve broken down and gone away, yet in your heart, you still hold them dear, but for what, I don’t know! Thanks for commenting!

Whenever I heard My Immortal for the first time and every other time it seemed to hover on the edge of an explosion. It may be because I’ve heard Bring me to Life so many times, which was full of fireworks. Anyways, My Immortal is quite unique for it’s simplicity, I admit it brings me close to tears. One song that also brings me close to crying is High Hopes by Pink Floyd, especially the slide guitar at the end.

There are 2 versions of My Immortal, this is my preferred version though. The other version has electric guitars and a big rock ending, but this version is simply gorgeous. I’m a total Pink Floyd anorak (favourite band) so I know what you mean about High Hopes, the ending solo has moved me close to tears also, especially because that song plays like a farewell track. Nobody Home can get me a little emotional too. Thanks for commenting!
