The 30 Day Song Challenge – Day 10: A song that reminds you of your father.

10 03 2011

This is a great subject to challenge me about. There are plenty of songs which remind me of people, and my Dad has songs which make me think of him, for a variety of reasons. I think some of my fondest memories are those songs that we hear on the radio, but somehow ‘forget’ the lyrics, and make up our own lyrics on the fly…normally with amusing and rude results! It’s all in good spirit and fun, and normally has us in stitches.

Since I began this blog in January, my dad one day wrote down a list of songs on a paper entitled ‘tracks if dad had a blog’ – I’ve kept this piece of paper safe, knowing that one day I would want to be calling upon it. That day is today, and I’m going to select one of the songs from that piece of paper. I thought it was a really nice gesture!

There are 16 songs on this sheet, and I selected todays song through the very scientific procedure of closing my eyes and stopping at random.

The result is pretty good in my opinion. Today’s song is Africa by ToTo. Cracking tune to be honest, great keyboard lines throughout, wonderful melody and a huge sing along chorus if ever there was one.

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She’s coming in 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way,
Hoping to find some long forgotten words or ancinet melodies
He turned to me as if to say, Hurry boy, it’s waiting there for you

CHORUS:
It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what’s right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serangetti
I seek to cure what’s deep inside, frightened of this thing that I’ve become

CHORUS
(Instrumental break)

Hurry boy, she’s waiting there for you
It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa, I passed some rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa, I passed some rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

I’m a rocker at heart, and part of me secretly wants to look like this. You have those dreams of shredding the guitar on a stage! Thanks for commenting!
