A Song A Day: May 3rd – Back to Skool…

3 05 2011

The reason why I’ve subtitled this post ‘back to skool’ is that today I begin the first day of my new job, back at the school I used to attend in the 90’s when I was only knee-high to a grasshopper! It’s a weird feeling. It adds to the theory that life goes in circles also. I suppose it’s like getting the book stamped. Studied there, check. Volunteered there, check. Working there, check!   *STAMP!* – I was having a little chuckle to myself getting my work clothes ready again, dubbing them ‘school trousers’ – I’m easily amused haha

But on a serious note, I don’t think I could be happier at the moment. I’m genuinely excited about the work and what I can do and acheive in the role for the school, parents, children and local council. I’m just super stoked. So this morning I’ll be leaving to walk to school once more. It’ll be one of the earliest starts for a while, not that I mind that, if anything. I’d rather be up early and working then sleeping in bed trying to find things to do. This could be the start of something pretty awesome.

So yes… how can I sum up my mood in music today… Simple…. See below :-P

A Song A Day: May 1st – It’s Time To Agitate

1 05 2011

May? It’s May already? Blimmin’ heck time is moving fast. Seems like only yesterday I was setting up this blog and thinking about some of the music I’ll be able to post and the fun that I will no doubt be having… and still having! It’s nearly 6pm now as I’m sat here writing this, and earlier this year, and what feels like last week it’ll be pitch black outside and the night would of been settled in. I’m looking out my window and there is plenty of daylight, the trees are full of leaves and it’s summer is right around the corner. I’ve had a weird combination of cold and hayfever the past few days – it’s outstayed it’s welcome and I’m not a big fan of blocked noses, especially at night!!!

Anyway… I’m really looking forward to May because it’s when I start my new job! I’m going to be working at my local primary school one day a week – helping to keep their website ticking over. I’m super excited and greatful for the oppotunity.

I’m going to kick May off with some new music from a trio who go by the monkier ‘The Agitator’ – I’m not 100% sure what to class them as but alternative covers it some what. They’re very upfront and in your face… in a good way. It’s ‘no frills’ music. I’ve only heard a couple of tracks from them via spotify, but the one which has had me reaching for the replay button a-plenty is one track called ‘Give Me All That You Got!’

The song is an absolute stonker of a tune. Simple and minimalistic in design with just vocals and percussion. Rip-roaring it’s nature and instantly infectious. Derek, the singer has one meaty pair of lungs at his disposal and he chocks out his words with a stark and somewhat refreshing conviction. I really hope that this group takes off.

A Song A Day: April 18th – Monday Morning Is Arriving

18 04 2011

Good morning there bloggers! I hope you had a good weekend. It’s Monday morning once again, time to welcome in the week and look forward to the challenges ahead.

One thing I’ve discovered is I need to take more photos. Yesterday we had the first harvest from our garden, namely some Rhubarb which went into a very nice mum-made crumble. Served with custard as pudding to the Roast Gammon dinner it went down very well. I’m looking forward to having more harvested goodness from our garden.

Last night was fun also, watching Toy Story 3 with the parentals, tucking into plenty of popcorn before getting settled afterwards for TNA Lockdown. I’m so easily amused :p

Today it seems fitting that I share with you a little Monday morning music (damn, I sound chipper at the moment!) This is one of my favourite pieces of music to start a day with. It put’s you in the right mood, it’s joyous, happy, upbeat and elegant. You can almost picture the sun breaking over the horizon, casting a glow across the land to this song. I can’t help but feel that there is something rather English about it also. It just has that feel to me.

Today, i’m sharing Arrival of the Queen of Sheeba by Handel.

Wordless Wednesday: 13th April, 2011 – The ‘Instrumedley’

13 04 2011

This piece of music is called Instrumedley, and is a medley of instrumental passages from Dream Theaters music, and some of the side projects they’ve been involved in. This really is 4 musicians at the top of their game. I recommend going full screen for this one due to the nature of the video. The way it’s edited together gives a superb view of the music being performed.

A Song A Day: April 12th – One Day Like This…

12 04 2011

Drinking in the morning sun...

Occasionally a song comes along seemingly out of nowhere and it sounds totally timeless, fresh and just absolutely bang on the money it makes you wonder what you did before it came to stay. Todays song is a prime example of this.

The chances are that you’ve heard this tune in some capacity. It’s been used on television an absolute truck-load of times, usually for when they want some uplifiting, happy or inspirational music. Even after the numerous plays, this song doesn’t depreciate one little bit.

The song has an absolute huge sound. Grandiose orchestra backings throughout, a colossal-sized chorus and ending. This is the kind of song which is the sound of summer and hot sunny days. It’s melodic, uplifting and anthemic. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to fully express the awesomeness of this song. Just sit back and enjoy, close your eyes and let it wash over you.

Today, I present to you… One Day Like This by Elbow. The video below is a live rendition done for the BBC, it’s just pure brilliance. God has this on his walkman for sure.

Drinking in the morning sun
Blinking in the morning sun
Shaking off the heavy one
Heavy like a loaded gun

What made me behave that way?
Using words I never say
I can only think it must be love
Oh, anyway, it ¡’s looking like a beautiful day

Someone tell me how I feel
It¡¯s silly wrong but vivid right
Oh, kiss me like the final meal
Yeah, kiss me like we die tonight

Cause holy cow, I love your eyes
And only now I see the light
Yeah, lying with me half-awake
Oh, anyway, it is looking like a beautiful day

When my face is chamois-creased
If you think I’ll wink, I did
Laugh politely at repeats
Yeah, kiss me when my lips are thin

Cause holy cow, I love your eyes
And only now I see you like
Yeah, lying with me half-awake
Stumbling over what to say
Well, anyway, it ¡s looking like a beautiful day

So throw those curtains wide!
One day like this a year ¡’d see me right!

A Song A Day: April 5th – A Fluffy Little Post

5 04 2011

Today’s post is quite different from yesterdays. I’m bringing you an ambient track today. When I first heard this song, I used to fast forward my way through it and skip it on my tape. However, with the groups most recent release I started to look back into their history books and re listened to it. I like the song considerably more now I’m a little bit older and wiser. It’s pretty laid back but with just enough going on so it doesn’t get boring or too meh.

This is straight out of the 90’s incase you couldn’t tell. The spoken words at the start of the track contrast nicely with the main tinkling keyboard melody and obligatory synth sounds. The keyboards continue throughout the entire track playing the same melodic passages in pattern with various vocal samples laid over the top. I think that this one may take a few listens to really appreciate but it’s an infectious melody and you’ll find yourself thinking off it throughout the day I’m sure.

Those synaesthetic souls out there will definitely approve of this one. Little Fluffy Clouds by The Orb

A Song A Day – April 2nd – Fix You

2 04 2011

The past few weeks have been some of the most eventuful in my life. There’s one blog I like to follow called Seycen and their song of the day just the other day was about how times are changing. I can’t help but feel the same about my own life at the moment. A lot of things have changed for me recently, I’ve had things come and go, circumstances change and things coming true which I prayed wouldn’t. It’s got me thinking at the moment about where my life stands. It’s a little confusing, a little taxing, but I know i’ll get through it. I’ve got my job interview to look forward too and that’s my main focus at the moment.

Those of you who have liked my facebook page may well of seen a video of this song go up recently. It’s too good not to share in full. The lyrics are well crafted and we can all relate to parts of them at some point I feel, myself included, especially at the moment.  The ending chorus repeats when that guitar line comes in is so anthemic and it’s like a big release. It feels like that there is hope and that things may not be quite as bad as they seem, and that maybe with the change and with everything that’s going on, there may just be a silver lining as it were.

Today’s song is Fix You by Coldplay.

When you try your best, but you don’t succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can’t replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
When you’re too in love to let it go
But if you never try you’ll never know
Just what you’re worth

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down on your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down on your face
And on your face I…

Tears stream down on your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down on your face
And on your face I…

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

A Song A Day: April 1st…Wait..What?!

1 04 2011

It’s April now which means that it’s been 3 full months of blogging everyday! 90 songs down so far, 275 songs to go. I’m finding this blogging lark at the moment a good balance between enjoyment and challenge at the moment. It’s enough to keep me on my toes, but to the point I’m finding it bothersome. That’s how it should be.

I want to give some epic congratz to everybody who’s undertaking the postaday or postaweek challenges this year and has so far kept up with it. It’s hard trying to find the time and the inspiration to post everyday or even every week. Credit where credit is due.

Today I’m going to dedicate this song to all my fellow bloggers (irregardless of posting schedules) To all of you, wordpress posting, tag creating, catogory classing, custom-menu creating, facebook linking, inspiration finding, email subscribing, stumbling, tweeting, tumbling, commenting, retweeting, reblogging people…feel free to crank this one as high as you want.

This is pure cheese, and that’s what makes it so freakin’ awesome. This is Joe ‘Bean’ Esposito – You’re The Best.

Try to be best
‘Cause you’re only a man
And a man’s gotta learn to take it

Try to believe
Though the going gets rough
That you gotta hang tough to make it

History repeats itself
Try and you’ll succeed

Never doubt that you’re the one
And you can have your dreams!

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you dow-ow-ow-ow-own

Fight ‘til the end
Cause your life will depend
On the strength that you have inside you

Ah you gotta be proud
starin’ out in the cloud
When the odds in the game defy you

Try your best to win them all
and one day time will tell
when you’re the one that’s standing there
you’ll reach the final bell!

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you dow-ow-ow-ho-how-ho-own

INSPIRING GUITAR SOLO

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you dow-ow-ow-ow-own

Fight ‘til you drop
never stop
can’t give up
Til you reach the top (FIGHT!)
you’re the best in town (FIGHT!)
Listen to that sound
A little bit of all you got
Can never bring you down

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
