A Song A Day: May 3rd – Back to Skool…

3 05 2011

The reason why I’ve subtitled this post ‘back to skool’ is that today I begin the first day of my new job, back at the school I used to attend in the 90’s when I was only knee-high to a grasshopper! It’s a weird feeling. It adds to the theory that life goes in circles also. I suppose it’s like getting the book stamped. Studied there, check. Volunteered there, check. Working there, check!   *STAMP!* – I was having a little chuckle to myself getting my work clothes ready again, dubbing them ‘school trousers’ – I’m easily amused haha

But on a serious note, I don’t think I could be happier at the moment. I’m genuinely excited about the work and what I can do and acheive in the role for the school, parents, children and local council. I’m just super stoked. So this morning I’ll be leaving to walk to school once more. It’ll be one of the earliest starts for a while, not that I mind that, if anything. I’d rather be up early and working then sleeping in bed trying to find things to do. This could be the start of something pretty awesome.

So yes… how can I sum up my mood in music today… Simple…. See below :-P

A Song A Day: May 1st – It’s Time To Agitate

1 05 2011

May? It’s May already? Blimmin’ heck time is moving fast. Seems like only yesterday I was setting up this blog and thinking about some of the music I’ll be able to post and the fun that I will no doubt be having… and still having! It’s nearly 6pm now as I’m sat here writing this, and earlier this year, and what feels like last week it’ll be pitch black outside and the night would of been settled in. I’m looking out my window and there is plenty of daylight, the trees are full of leaves and it’s summer is right around the corner. I’ve had a weird combination of cold and hayfever the past few days – it’s outstayed it’s welcome and I’m not a big fan of blocked noses, especially at night!!!

Anyway… I’m really looking forward to May because it’s when I start my new job! I’m going to be working at my local primary school one day a week – helping to keep their website ticking over. I’m super excited and greatful for the oppotunity.

I’m going to kick May off with some new music from a trio who go by the monkier ‘The Agitator’ – I’m not 100% sure what to class them as but alternative covers it some what. They’re very upfront and in your face… in a good way. It’s ‘no frills’ music. I’ve only heard a couple of tracks from them via spotify, but the one which has had me reaching for the replay button a-plenty is one track called ‘Give Me All That You Got!’

The song is an absolute stonker of a tune. Simple and minimalistic in design with just vocals and percussion. Rip-roaring it’s nature and instantly infectious. Derek, the singer has one meaty pair of lungs at his disposal and he chocks out his words with a stark and somewhat refreshing conviction. I really hope that this group takes off.

A Song A Day: April 18th – Monday Morning Is Arriving

18 04 2011

Good morning there bloggers! I hope you had a good weekend. It’s Monday morning once again, time to welcome in the week and look forward to the challenges ahead.

One thing I’ve discovered is I need to take more photos. Yesterday we had the first harvest from our garden, namely some Rhubarb which went into a very nice mum-made crumble. Served with custard as pudding to the Roast Gammon dinner it went down very well. I’m looking forward to having more harvested goodness from our garden.

Last night was fun also, watching Toy Story 3 with the parentals, tucking into plenty of popcorn before getting settled afterwards for TNA Lockdown. I’m so easily amused :p

Today it seems fitting that I share with you a little Monday morning music (damn, I sound chipper at the moment!) This is one of my favourite pieces of music to start a day with. It put’s you in the right mood, it’s joyous, happy, upbeat and elegant. You can almost picture the sun breaking over the horizon, casting a glow across the land to this song. I can’t help but feel that there is something rather English about it also. It just has that feel to me.

Today, i’m sharing Arrival of the Queen of Sheeba by Handel.

Wordless Wednesday: 13th April, 2011 – The ‘Instrumedley’

13 04 2011

This piece of music is called Instrumedley, and is a medley of instrumental passages from Dream Theaters music, and some of the side projects they’ve been involved in. This really is 4 musicians at the top of their game. I recommend going full screen for this one due to the nature of the video. The way it’s edited together gives a superb view of the music being performed.

A Song A Day: April 12th – One Day Like This…

12 04 2011

Drinking in the morning sun...

Occasionally a song comes along seemingly out of nowhere and it sounds totally timeless, fresh and just absolutely bang on the money it makes you wonder what you did before it came to stay. Todays song is a prime example of this.

The chances are that you’ve heard this tune in some capacity. It’s been used on television an absolute truck-load of times, usually for when they want some uplifiting, happy or inspirational music. Even after the numerous plays, this song doesn’t depreciate one little bit.

The song has an absolute huge sound. Grandiose orchestra backings throughout, a colossal-sized chorus and ending. This is the kind of song which is the sound of summer and hot sunny days. It’s melodic, uplifting and anthemic. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to fully express the awesomeness of this song. Just sit back and enjoy, close your eyes and let it wash over you.

Today, I present to you… One Day Like This by Elbow. The video below is a live rendition done for the BBC, it’s just pure brilliance. God has this on his walkman for sure.

Drinking in the morning sun
Blinking in the morning sun
Shaking off the heavy one
Heavy like a loaded gun

What made me behave that way?
Using words I never say
I can only think it must be love
Oh, anyway, it ¡’s looking like a beautiful day

Someone tell me how I feel
It¡¯s silly wrong but vivid right
Oh, kiss me like the final meal
Yeah, kiss me like we die tonight

Cause holy cow, I love your eyes
And only now I see the light
Yeah, lying with me half-awake
Oh, anyway, it is looking like a beautiful day

When my face is chamois-creased
If you think I’ll wink, I did
Laugh politely at repeats
Yeah, kiss me when my lips are thin

Cause holy cow, I love your eyes
And only now I see you like
Yeah, lying with me half-awake
Stumbling over what to say
Well, anyway, it ¡s looking like a beautiful day

So throw those curtains wide!
One day like this a year ¡’d see me right!
